Why buy an E-Reader Tablet?
Due to the fact that I work in IT , most of the technical books that I need to read are obsolete in a few years or even months. The e-books on the other side, are much more practical when it comes to reading technical books, things that you would not necessarily read on the beach, but at your desk or when making some research.
Much of the time when I read is during the moments that I take the public transportation (about 2h/day), so having something light, always at hand and not necessarily needing an internet connection.
And the final reason is that it’s making me really tired to read from the screen of my computer/laptop. I can only concentrate for a few pages.
What it’s available on the market?
Before ordering it, I had hesitated a little between Sony’s Reader, and the Nook tablets.
The IPad was totally not an option for me. Too heavy, too bling-bling, forcing you to make another subscription for the 3G option and far too expensive for what I really needed.
Why I chose the Kindle from Amazon?
1. Amazon detains one of the biggest online bookstore unlike the Nook /Sony/Apple tablet
2. It provides wireless, it doesn’t make your eyes tired(e-ink technology) and you can perfectly well read your books offline (unlike the IPad that is too bling-bling for me that i only want to read books.)
3. I can read my own PDFs and documents. Even if I’m not in the mood/budget to buy one of their books, I can read my own files without problems. This was among one of the most important reasons.(provided also by the Nook or the Sony Reader)
4. Easy, slender and discreet to fit in my handbag.
5. Excellent price compared to the existing e-readers. I mean the one from Sony was around 300 Euros, the IPad more than 500. The only one with a similar price was the Nook (139 dolars)
Of course it has other options like listening to music/audio-books, text-to-speech for some of the books you buy(not for your own documents), but my mp3 player was already doing the music/audio-books part, so this is not of such interests to me.
Testing the Kindle 2 Wi-Fi
Yesterday I received the new Kindle 2 WiFi from Amazon.

After playing a little with it I liked:
- the paper-like image that it’s optimal for reading
- clean rendering of the text especially for the Amazon type content
- the fast wireless connection and the fact that I could receive and transfer quite fast my content(from Amazon)
- the dictionary and find/highlighting option
- great sound for such a small device
What I didn’t like that much:
- A major problem is the fact that it sometimes freezes without reason. This problem has already been reported, there is no rule, but it seems to be related to some of the files on the Kindle or to the battery level
- The keypad it’s a little difficult to use.
- The files in PDF format (especially your own) don’t benefit of the text size option so I have to read each time a third of the page.
Still to be tested:
- the battery-life
- don’t all the page transitions give you head-aches?
My wish-list:
- integration with Google Books
